What Is a Gutshot Straight Draw?

What does a gutshot look like?

Your two cards and two board cards give you four of the five you need: 8, 9, J, Q. That makes this the weakest of the common poker draws.
Why is it called a gutshot?
Because the card you need lands in the gut of the sequence — not the front, not the back, but the hole in the middle: 8-9-?-J-Q. The other names say the same thing from different angles: an inside straight draw needs a card from inside the run, and you will also hear belly buster.
Four outs and eight outs deserve different decisions, and both look like "four to a straight" at a glance.
How often does a gutshot hit?
Four 10s exist and none are on the board: four outs, the cards that turn your draw into a made hand. Counting them is a skill of its own, covered in poker outs.
Each out is worth roughly 2% per card to come, and two cards are still coming:
4 outs × ~4% ≈ 16–17%
Now the same 8-9 on a different flop:

That is an open-ended straight draw at ~32%, twice the gutshot's chances.

Should you chase a gutshot?

Pot4,000
Bet4,000

Calling 4,000 to win 12,000 is a price of about 33%, against a draw worth ~17%. Good fold — that's chips you keep. Turning a bet size into a percentage belongs to pot odds.
The overcorrection is deciding a gutshot is never worth a chip. Shrink that bet and the same hand flips: a small bet into a large pot can price you below your number, and calling then makes money over the long run.
You'll also run into these
Two variations show up often enough to recognize on sight. The first is a double gutshot — two separate one-card holes in the same hand:

Two gaps, two ranks, eight outs — an open-ended draw's chances from a hand that does not look like one.
The second is a gutshot that is not only a gutshot. The same four outs can sit alongside two overcards or three cards of one suit, which gives you more ways to end up ahead than the 10s alone suggest. Recognize it, then still price the call.
Frequently asked questions
Can a gutshot improve on the turn?
Yes, and it is worth watching for. A turn card can open the run into an eight-out draw, add a fourth card of your suit, or pair you up. The hand you called with on the flop is not always the hand you hold on the turn, so recount before you decide again. Unfamiliar terms are defined in poker terms for beginners.
