What Is a Straddle in Poker? The Extra Blind, Explained

Who posts a straddle, and when?

The player to the big blind's left, before any card is dealt. A straddle goes in without looking, exactly the way the blinds do, and it becomes the largest forced bet of the hand. Everyone after it has to answer two big blinds instead of one to see a flop.

House rules decide whether the table allows it at all. Texas Hold'em rules sets out the blinds a hand always has; a straddle is the one nobody owes.

What does a straddle buy?

The last word before the flop. Action opens to the straddler's left and comes back around, so the straddler answers every preflop raise last and keeps the option to raise again.

That purchase expires with the flop. A straddle moves chips, not seats — the button still answers you on every round once the community cards arrive, so you have bought one round of speaking last and kept three of speaking early. Why is a straddle usually a losing play?

Because it doubles the stakes of a hand you have not seen. About 3% of deals are aces, kings, queens, jacks or ace-king — the hands that genuinely want a bigger pot. The rest are paying twice the price to find out they are not one of them.

It also shortens everybody. Measure a stack in big blinds and a live straddle halves the number, which moves the whole table toward the depth where short stack decisions start.

What does a straddle do to everyone else's hand?

It triples the chips sitting in the pot before a single player has looked at a card. Three forced bets instead of two, and the largest of them twice the usual size.

A bigger pot in front of a raise makes entering it cheaper in relative terms, so more hands become playable and more players take a flop. That is the honest case for the table that likes straddling: it makes the game bigger and looser, which is worth something to whoever plays the resulting pots best.

The seat that gains most is the button, which now has position on a pot half again the usual size. The seat that gains least is the one that posted it.
